Maldives re-sets sights on 1 million tourists

“I really believe we can bring 1 million tourists to Maldives this year. We can very much confirm that when January and February end,” Adeeb said.

Despite a late flourish in tourist arrivals, the government’s aim to reach 1 million tourists failed after 958,027 tourists arrived in Maldives by the end of last year.

However, Adeeb insisted that the government has re-set sights on the same target this year.

Though tourist arrivals in November last year were relatively lower in comparison with previous years, Adeeb remains confident that the Chinese New Year celebrated on February 8 would see an unprecedented boost in arrivals.

“As the Maldives market is based in China, large numbers of tourists come here to celebrate the Chinese New Year. I will say that Maldives’ New Year is already here,” he added.

Underlining the planned activities to promote Maldives tourism this year, Adeeb stressed that the country would witness positive effects as world tourism day is being celebrated in Maldives this year. Tourism Minister also highlighted that Maldives will host the most prestigious travel award this year.

“All of this would see Maldives take prominence throughout the world. Maldives will become a favored destination for tourists,” Adeeb said.
